The Night the Creator Lost at His Own Game

Golden 24, bedroom match, and the moment a system escaped its designer

I built Golden 24 and have been working with 24-point puzzles for about eight years with students. Over time, I’ve seen almost every classic pattern—5551, 3388, and many variations that train intuition more than calculation. It became familiar territory, almost predictable.

A month ago, I updated Golden 24 on the App Store again. Nothing dramatic—just iteration on a system that has already lived in classrooms, code, and student projects.

Tonight, something unexpected happened.

In our bedroom, Cindy picked up Golden 24 on her iPhone and played for about an hour. She doesn’t usually play 24-point games, and she was not trained in the patterns the way my students were.

I walked over and said casually:

“Let’s fight to see who gets 10 first.”

It was not supposed to be serious.

It ended 10:5.

She won.

At the end, she said: “功夫不负有心人啊。”

I took a screenshot of the moment before the connection broke.

I have spent years building this game, teaching it, and watching students grow through it. I thought I understood its space completely. But tonight, in a simple bedroom match, the system I built produced a result that did not depend on my experience at all.

It reminded me of something subtle but important:

When a learning system is well designed, it eventually stops belonging to the person who created it. It begins to belong to the people who play it.

Tonight, Golden 24 did exactly that.
