RHEA, One Letter at a Time
On April 12–16, 2026, Cindy and I experienced one of our most memorable Disney Cruise trips. We stayed on the 10th floor, in the best cruise room we had ever experienced. My birthday was April 17.
During the trip, Rhea gave Grandpa a cloth-covered notebook and a handwritten birthday card.
The notebook cover said:
❤️ GRANDPA ❤️
You know a lot because you've seen a lot,
You share a lot because you care a lot.
The notebook was titled:
A HANDWRITTEN LEGACY
GRANDPA'S STORY
A MEMORY AND KEEPSAKE JOURNAL FOR MY FAMILY
At first, I thought the gift was simply a beautiful notebook.
Then I looked closer.
The envelope carrying the card had Rhea's signature:
RHE
A
The final "A" had moved underneath the first three letters because there was no space left on the right side.
The envelope was sealed with a turtle sticker—Rhea's favorite animal.
But inside the card, something different appeared.
The four letters:
R H E A
finally fit on one line.
The "A" had two horizontal bars, exactly the way Rhea wrote it.
And above the letters were two mysterious marks: a large "6" and a small egg-shaped symbol leaning to the right.
Tiny details.
A whole universe.
A child's handwriting is not just a message.
It is a record of a moment.
The uneven letters, the overflowing margin, the favorite turtle sticker, and the invented shapes above her name are all traces of a little person becoming herself.
Years later, Grandpa noticed that this card was not merely something to keep.
It was something to study.
Like a beautiful artifact in a museum.
Every line, every mark, every choice carried a story.
Programming has taught me that details matter.
A single character can change the behavior of an entire program.
Life works the same way.
A missing space.
A letter moved to the next line.
A turtle sticker.
A child's unique way of writing an "A."
These tiny details transform an ordinary birthday card into an irreplaceable artifact.
