The Circle That Came Back

Enning’s first moving object, first if, and first glimpse of programming as play

Enning was ready to try Khan Academy Grade 6, but her Grade 5 fraction word problems revealed a deeper gap. She confused quantities such as 5/12 and 12/5, so we stayed with the fraction units and practiced them again and again instead of rushing ahead.

In the second half, we switched completely. For the first time, Enning used P5JS to make an object move. She learned that changing x could simultaneously change the circle’s position, size, and color.

When the circle moved diagonally and eventually escaped the canvas, I asked Enning to figure out the condition and action needed to bring it back.

She struggled with assignment, trying expressions such as x - 1 = x + 1. We used arrows to make the idea visual: x <- x + 1 means calculating a new value and putting it into x.

Then the if worked.

The circle came back.

Enning suddenly shouted:

“If we put x in the third argument, the circle will get bigger and bigger!”

She had discovered that the same changing variable could control position and diameter. Then she said she liked yellow and wanted to find out how to make it yellow. We experimented with the RGB values and found fill(x, x, 0)—a changing yellow.

For the first time, code was not merely something to type. It was something she could make move, grow, and change.

Meanwhile, her TypingClub journey had reached Lesson 59, “Practice: c & ,” another small sign that the tools of programming were becoming more familiar to her.

A difficult lesson does not have to end with difficulty. After slowing down to repair a mathematical foundation, Enning entered a completely different mode of learning: experimenting, noticing, guessing, testing, and laughing.

Her first moving circle gave concrete meaning to variables, assignment, conditions, and repetition. More importantly, it gave her the experience of making an idea visible on the screen.
