The First Triangle

An eighth grader with zero coding experience discovers that a computer can bring his own ideas to life.

Cloud started with no programming experience.

Over just a few days, he explored the terminal, learned his first Python turtle commands, and asked question after question about directories, coordinates, and how computers "know where they are."

He was also eager to strengthen his mathematics. Every morning, before programming, we began with a challenge.

Today's challenge wasn't Swift.

It was Grade 2.

Cloud spent the first thirty minutes taking the Grade 2 Course Challenge on Khan Academy. The goal was simple:

"Try your best to get 29 out of 30."

He scored 24.

There was no disappointment.

Instead, we smiled and said,

"Hopefully next time we'll do even better on the Grade 3 challenge."

Then we opened Xcode.

His first Swift program printed:

Time for a break.

"Ten or fifteen minutes?" I asked.

"Ten."

A second later...

"Oh... fifteen."

He disappeared—probably to play a game.

I finally had to send his mother, who was busy at work, a message asking her to bring him back.

Soon he returned, smiling, ready for the second half.

Now came the real adventure.

Cloud typed every letter of his Swift program himself.

He learned about UIBezierPath, colors, lines, and points.

The hardest part wasn't writing code.

It was understanding space.

He spent quite a while trying to choose the starting point of his triangle.

Was it because Cartesian coordinates were still unfamiliar?

Or because Apple's coordinate system begins at the top-left corner instead of the mathematical origin he expected?

Neither of us knew for sure.

But we explored together.

Finally...

A red outline.

A blue fill.

His first triangle appeared inside the iPad Simulator.

When the two-hour lesson ended, he proudly shared his work in our children's Slack workspace.

I said,

"See you next time."

His reply came immediately:

"下课啦?"

It didn't sound like a student who had been watching the clock.

It sounded like someone surprised that the adventure was already over.

Every learner remembers a first creation.

Sometimes it's Hello, World!

Sometimes it's a triangle.

The triangle itself isn't important.

The important moment is when a child discovers:

"The computer can create something because I told it how."

Curiosity had become creation.

And his mother's quiet response captured the moment perfectly:

"存下来 @_@"

Yes.

Save it.

Years from now, this little blue triangle may be far more valuable than anyone realizes.
